    Rule of thirds – A photo-composition rule that divides the frame into nine equal areas. Subjects could be aligned along one of the lines or appear at an intersection.

    Shutter speed – Shutter speed determines how long the shutter stays open; it controls the amount of time light is allowed to reach the film. Short shutter speeds are good for action and sunny-day photos. Slow shutter speed is good for low-light situations.

    • You cannot take a picture: maybe memory card is full. Move the pictures to a computer and erase the memory card, or delete pictures that you do not need, or switch to a smaller image size.
    • A delay occurs between your pressing the shutter button and the shutter opening. In this case, you could miss fleeting expressions.
    • Control which part of the scene the camera will focus on:� Read your user guide.� Understand how focus works in various exposure modes.
    • Focus lamp blinks when you press the shutter button halfway down. Camera may be having trouble focusing.
    • If flash photos are too dark, you are probably too far from the subject. Most built-in flash units are good only up to about ten feet. They don’t have the power to illuminate subjects much father than that.
    • Photos are too light when using flash:� Reduce the flash power.
    • Pictures are blurred:� Hold the camera steady as you smoothly press the shutter. You are too close to the subject, or the subject might be moving too fast.
    • A no-no:� Taking pictures of hte sun or other objects that are bright. You will injure your eyes, and the sensors.

    Bracketing – A trick used by photographers to ensure proper exposure without a meter, or to ensure a more precise exposure when a meter is used. A series of images is taken, one at the estimated or metered exposure, one slightly over, and one slightly under.

    CCD – Charge-coupled device is the most common form of photosensitive cells used to convert incoming light into electrical signals in digital cameras.
